Easy Fix For Common Problems

If your computer runs into problems such as software freezing up, files not opening up correctly, sluggish performance, etc., the following process runs a hard drive utility that can fix many of the problems that cause these symptoms:

1. Close down any software you are running.

2. Select the Appple menu in the upper left corner and choose "restart".

3. When your screen goes black hold down the Apple and S keys.

4. When white lettering appears on the screen, let up on the Apple and S keys.

5. When the lines quit scrolling, type in the following exactly as shown: /sbin/fsck -fy

(note: one space should be between the k and hypen)

6. Press Return. It can take a few minutes for this utility to run, you will eventually get a message saying your hard drive "appears to be OK" , or a message saying it has been "changed/modified/repaired".

7A. If it's "OK" type in reboot and press Return.

7B. If you are told something has been changed/modified/repaired, press the Up arrow key and the Return key.

8. Repeat 7B until you get the "OK" message. Then do step 7A.

Note: Even if you get the "OK" message the first time around, several problems and/or potential problems have been fixed.
To make this a smooth process be sure to jot down or print out the steps so you can easily reference them.

Making Sure You Are On The City High Network

Every once and a while a signal from a neighboring wireless network will be strong enough that your laptop will connect to it without you knowing it happened. In some cases you can actually access the internet over one of these connections, but you aren't able to print or access our file server. You can check to see if you are on the City High network by clicking on the Airport strength icon in the upper right corner of your desktop as shown below:

Make sure the "City High Wireless" network is selected. Enter the password if you are prompted and select the option to remember the password. (Sensitive information such as passwords will not be posted online. Contact me directly if you need a password) Whenever you have trouble getting online, prtinting, etc this should be the first thing you check.

As you run into problems in the future this should be the first place you go (assuming you have access to the internet). If you cannot find a solution to your problem or answer to your question on the blog feel free to contact me via email: johnw@cityhighschool.org , phone: extension 219 , or drop by my corner. Like many other blogs this will be an open forum in which you can feel free to post comments, ask questions, etc. Always remember that a stupid question does not exist, especially when it comes to technology.
